Pedometers (2001)
Carpenter and Washington Schools
These funds will purchase pedometers to enhance the physical education curriculum initially for elementary students at Carpenter and Washington Schools. The use of pedometers encourages students to take an active interest in performing at their individual best.
Studio Experience in the Art Room (2001)
This grant will cover the purchase of weaving looms, a sewing machine and some potter wheels. It will allow students to take part in an independent "studio" experience in the art room.
Born to Read (2003)
Second grade students will write stories explaining the importance of reading to children (some stories will be translated into Spanish). The stories will be illustrated, "published," and then donated to ob/gyn floor at a local hospital for families with new babies.
5th Graders on the Write Track Conference (2004)
This grant will provide a day-long conference for 5th graders to enhance and encourage writing skills.
Ocean Conservation Note Cards (2005)
Students work in cooperative groups to research endangered ocean animals. The groups will design note cards featuring the animals, which will be printed and sold during Open House. All proceeds to be donated to the Shedd Aquarium. All second graders will participate.
Oral reading/creating books on tape (2005)
Students raise money and purchase a soft-cover copy of a story. Students then will practice reading the book to improve fluency, intonation, expression and appropriate speed. A professional audio engineer next records each child reading. The children subsequently design and create a CD label and write a summary of the story to be included in the CD jacket.
Poetry Week (2006)
Franklin and Washington Schools
A child's voice poetry week, co-funded with the generosity of Franklin's and Washington's PTOs. Bill Buczunsky is a poet and performer who works with students to help them imagine, create and perform poetry. At the end of the week-long interactive assemblies, the students will participate in an open-mic night in which they can perform their poetry to families and friends.
Study Island (2008)
Washington and Franklin Schools
A subscription computer diagnostic and instrumental program used as a way to assess, accelerate, and individualize curriculum. It provides opportunities for every student to monitor and become responsible for learning.
Digital Photo Books (2008)
Students, lead by teachers, will make digital photo books to align with the curriculum. Classroom teachers will utilize the books the way it works best for them.
